Why this character belongs on skin

Beneath the ink of this character beats a heart: the word for mind joined to the word for true, sincere, whole. 慎 is prudence, but not the timid kind—care with the true thing inside it. The Confucians built a whole discipline on one phrase: 慎独, be watchful of yourself when you are alone. Anyone can behave under eyes.
