Cultural Story
Wang Wei sent a friend a poem of red beans, hong dou sheng nan guo, spring branching anew, a small seed made to carry longing across a distance. The character dou is that humble legume raised to a token of love. From the same kitchen the dou fu of the Han, said to be perfected by Prince Liu An, turned the soybean into the soft white staple of a thousand tables.

Read the story behind the character
A breakfast stall sells dou jiang and dou fu, and a salad gleams with dou ya the cook sprouted overnight. The grocer stacks tu dou beside hong dou for the festival soup, and a menu lists dou fu in a dozen forms. The character dou still fills the morning bowl and the holiday pot, bean from field to table.
Why this character belongs on skin
The character 豆 began as a vessel, not a vegetable. In the bronze age it was a tall stemmed bowl raised on an altar, holding grain and meat for the dead and the gods. Only later did the same shape come to mean the humble bean. There is a quiet theology in that slide from shrine to supper. To carry 豆 is to remember that what we eat and what we worship share one vessel. The farmer's bean, the ancestor's offering, the bowl on your grandmother's table — all the same glyph, all the same spine of a stem holding something up toward the light. We are vessels too, narrow at the base, open at the top, made to be filled and emptied by turns. Ink it low, near the heart or the gut, and it becomes a small altar you carry: a reminder that even the plainest thing you hold up is, in the right hands, a kind of prayer.
