Cultural Story

Zhang Ji, moored at night by the Hanshan Temple, heard the 钟声 travel across the water to his boat at midnight and set it down in a poem still recited by the river. The 钟 was the bronze that measured the dark with its stroke. From that cold bell the character kept the sound that marks an hour and the ache of a traveler woken by it.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A 闹钟 jerks a sleeper awake, a 钟表 shop repairs the worn movement of a grandfather clock, and a lover 钟情 at first meeting across the room. The 钟爱 of a grandparent spoils the child. The 时钟 on the wall ticks the train. The character now rings a morning and a heart, the old bronze bell of the river poem carried into an alarm and a devotion.

Why this character belongs on skin

At first there is only the stillness before the strike, the held breath of bronze in a temple cold with dawn. This character is the bell—and also the concentrated heart, the love that pools in one direction and will not be divided, as in the old phrase for devotion. When the bell sounds it does not choose who hears; it simply gives, and the sound outlasts the hand that swung it. Confucius said the gentleman was like music, resonant and even; the bell is his emblem, whole and unhurried, speaking once and meaning much. To be 钟 is to love a single thing completely, to let your attention ring rather than scatter. There is a freedom in devotion that the restless never know. Carry this on your skin and you carry a bell no one else can hear, a private toll that marks the hours of your own fidelity. Let the ink fall where it can be struck, softly, for the rest of your life.
