Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 常 Cháng (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi's gloss is a surprise: 「常,下帬也。从巾尚声。裳,常或从衣」 — 'the lower garment'; 常 and 裳 (skirt) were the same word, a piece of cloth. What is worn every day becomes what is done every day, and 常 slid from garment to constancy. 《易·系辞上》 fixes the cosmic sense: 「动静有常,刚柔断矣」 — 'movement and stillness have their constancy; thus firm and yielding are determined.' Laozi opens with it: 《老子》 1 「道可道,非常道;名可名,非常名」 — 'the way that can be spoken is not the constant way.' 《诗经·小雅·六月》 keeps the cloth sense alive in 「载是常服」. Disclosures: 常 also means 'ordinary, average' (平常, 常人), so a lone 常 can read 'unremarkable'; it is a common surname; and 无常 means impermanence — in folk religion 黑白无常 are the two deities who escort the dead. Cultural Story

常 began as a lower garment, a skirt, and the Shuowen lists it among clothes; because such dress was worn constantly, 常 came to mean 'constant' and 'ordinary.' The Dao de jing teaches that the 常, the steadfast way, is to be content. In the rites the 常 marked what was fixed and proper. So the word slid from a piece of clothing to the very idea of what does not change - the everyday worn close to the body of life.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'constant, enduring' — set here against Wang Huizhi, the Jin eccentric who sailed to a friend on a snowy-night whim and turned back at the door (兴尽而返). Honest caveat: 常 means 'ordinary' as often as 'eternal', and 无常 means impermanence / death-omen.
