Cultural Story

壶 is a pot or flask for holding liquid. The Tang 茶圣 陆羽 (Lu Yu) prized a 茶壶 (teapot) for brewing the perfect cup; 酒壶 (wine pots) pour through 李白's poems of friendship. The 诗经 mentions a 壶 of squash set out at the autumn harvest. A 暖壶 (thermos) is modern, but the curve is ancient — a belly to hold liquid and warmth.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A 水壶 (kettle) boils for tea on the stove; a 喷壶 (watering can) feeds the balcony herbs. Hikers carry a 暖壶 (thermos) of hot water on the trail; a 酒壶 pours at a banquet table. Convenience stores stack 水壶 by the checkout in summer. The character still shapes the vessel you grip — from a camp stove to a grandmother's cupboard.

Why this character belongs on skin

Once, a sage hid the whole universe inside a clay vessel no larger than two cupped hands. Hú is the vessel — the belly that holds wine, medicine, rain, the secrets you pour for no one but the night. The Daoists carried theirs slung at the belt, a small eternity of liquor and quiet. To be a vessel is to be filled and emptied by turns, to bear what is poured without asking its name. Christian and Confucian alike knew the cup as the instrument of offering. A man is a hú: shaped by pressure, broken by pride, refilled by grace. Ink it where the ribs hold the lungs, a mark that you are a container for more than you show. Let it say you have been poured from and poured into, and remained, somehow, whole enough to hold.
