Read the story behind the character
At a ceremony, a chairman 赐予, grants, a lifetime award while a junior writes 赐教, please instruct me, at the foot of an email to a mentor. A believer speaks of 恩赐, grace, from beyond. The character that renamed generals now softens a request for advice. The grant of a name or a word still flows downward from one who may give.
Why this character belongs on skin
It opens like a hand: 贝, the shell of old money, under 易—to grant, to bestow. 赐 once described the emperor's gift, silk and jade passed from the throne to a trembling courtier. But strip away the court and something more intimate remains: the fact that everything precious in your life arrived unbidden. Your sight, your hunger for beauty, the one who stayed—bestowed, not earned. The Stoics called it receiving what fate hands you as if it were a gift; the mystics went further and said it all is. 赐 is gratitude with posture, the nod you give the unknown benefactor. To carry it on the skin is to walk through the world like someone who knows they've been given everything.
