Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 同 同 (tóng, 2nd tone) means 'same, together, to share.' The Shuowen Jiezi: 合会也。从从口 — 'to assemble and meet; from 从 and 口,' many mouths joined in accord. Its canonical home is the Yijing: the Tongren hexagram (同人) opens 天与火同人 — 'heaven and fire: fellowship with men,' people of like mind gathered under the sky. The Lunyu prizes 和而不同 — 'harmonious yet not conforming,' the higher same. From 同心 (one heart) to 天下大同 (the great unity of all under heaven), 同 is the bond of shared purpose. Honest disclosure: 同 is a unifier, not a loner; a lone 同 can read as 'same as…' with the comparison missing. It sings when paired (同心, 同道). Kangxi: 6 strokes, 口部; Wuxing: Fire (火), though some tables give Earth (土) (verify).

Cultural Story

同 was together and the same. The Book of Rites dreamed of 大同, a great unity where the world was for all, not for one family. The strategists spoke of 同舟共济 -- crossing the river in the same boat, the travelers forced to pull as one. The word bound men to a shared state and a shared craft, the common oar and the common good.
