麗 drew two deer standing together, beauty as a paired grace, the matched elegance of creatures moving as one. The 詩經 sings of 麗 in a bride's procession. Later it shed the deer and became the general word for the fair and the fine. Beauty, in the old picture, was never solitary; it was two things keeping step, the symmetry a courtier noticed in a good omen.
