The simplified form sets a person within a boundary, 内, what lies within the wall. The Rites of Zhou split realm into 内 and 外, court and frontier. A letter marked 内容 was read only by the household. The histories speak of 内政, the affairs kept from envoys — who married whom, who inherited.

Read the story behind the character

A label reads 内容 warning, do not open. The 内心 of a matter stays unspoken at dinner. A reporter covers 国内 news on the front page. The 内部 memo circulates only among staff; 室内 plants line the office window, and no one waters them on time.

Why this character belongs on skin

What the door hides is the only country worth ruling. 内 is the inside — the inner rooms, the private heat, the self you do not perform. The character wraps an enclosing line around a blade, as if to say: the sharpest thing lives within. We are taught to polish our outsides, to curate the face we turn to the street. But the tattoo that means the most is the one no one sees at first — a word worn close to the heart, a name folded inward. In every tradition the sacred is an inner chamber: the holy of holies, the cave behind the waterfall, the silence under the breath. To mark 内 is to swear loyalty to your own depths. It is a small rebellion against a loud world. The outside can have you. The inside is yours, and this keeps the door.
