Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 吕 Lǚ (3rd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi is startlingly physical: 「呂,脊骨也。象形。昔太岳为禹心呂之臣,故封呂侯」 — the graph pictures two linked vertebrae, the spine, and Xu Shen adds the legend that Grand Yue served Yu the Great as his 'heart and spine', earning the fief of Lü. From backbone the word became measure: the six yin pitch-pipes, 六吕, paired against the six yang 律. 《周礼·春官·大司乐》 prescribes 「奏黄钟,歌大吕」, and 《汉书·律历志》 explains 「阴六为吕,吕以旅阳宣气」 — the yin pipes travel with the yang breath and let it sound. So 吕 means: the structure that makes pitch possible. Honest disclosure: to any Chinese reader 吕 is overwhelmingly the surname Lü (Lü Buwei, Lü Dongbin), so worn alone it reads as somebody's family name rather than as 'harmony' or 'backbone'. Pair it with 律 (律吕) to recover the musical sense.
Cultural Story
吕 was a pitchpipe. The 律吕 were the twelve tubes by which the court fixed the standard of sound, six yang and six yin. The surname carried it too: 吕不韦, the merchant who became chancellor and sponsored the Lü Spring and Autumn; 吕洞宾, the Daoist among the Eight Immortals. 吕剧 is Shandong's opera; 吕宋 the old name for Luzon.

Read the story behind the character
A musicologist measures a flute against the 律吕; a viewer watches 吕剧 on the county channel. 吕不韦 appears in the costume drama; a geographer recalls 吕宋 on an old Spanish map. The word does quiet work -- the pitch standard, the opera, the historical name, the island's old tag. It names what set the court's tone and what still sounds from a village stage and a period script.
Why this character belongs on skin
Two openings, stacked — 吕 was the spine, the column of vertebrae that holds a man upright, and later a pitch-pipe, the instrument that sets the standard tone. Both meanings are about the inner structure: the backbone you stand on, and the true note you tune your life to. We wobble, we drift off-key, we forget what holds us. To wear 吕 is to mark the axis — the spine that won't bend, the pitch only you can hear and must stay true to. The character is balanced, doubled, rare. Ink for the one with a straight back and a private music, who needs no crowd to know the right note when it sounds. Stand. Listen. The rest follows the spine.
