Why this character belongs on skin

土 is earth — not the planet, the dirt. The character is a sprout rising from a horizontal line of ground, life and soil in one stroke. The Chinese buried their dead in 土 and built their homes on it; to be human was to be of the earth and return to it. To carry 土 is to remember you are made of the same stuff as the field, the flood, the ancestor's grave. We float through cities pretending we are separate from the ground; this mark pulls you down, gently, to where you belong. It is for the person who has knelt in real soil, who knows the comfort of something older than the self underfoot. There is no arrogance in 土, only belonging. Ink it close to the bone, a small claim on the land that made you and will take you back. We are not visitors here. We are the sprout and the ground at once, and the ground wins, and that is fine.
