Cultural Story

The Shuowen shows 婦 as a woman (女) with a broom (帚), the married woman at her household work, and reads it as 服, 'to serve.' The Shi Jing honors the 婦 who weaves and tends the home, and the ideal 夫婦, husband and wife, stands at the root of the family the Classics revere. Over time 婦 widened to mean any woman, yet its first picture was specific: the wife with her broom, the center of the domestic order on which the old society was built.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The nation marks 婦女 (women, female) Day with parades; a happy 夫婦 (couple, husband and wife) celebrates their anniversary. A new 媳婦 (daughter-in-law, wife, bride) joins the family, and a mother visits 婦產科 (obstetrics, gynecology, maternity) for a checkup. The 主婦 (housewife, hostess, matron) plans the dinner, and a billboard champions 婦女's rights. 婦 is the modern word for women and wives — the couple, the mother-to-be, and the matron who still anchors the home the Classics described.

Why this character belongs on skin

Hands at the loom, the one who orders the household — that is 妇, the woman, the wife, the keeper of the inner order. The character once showed a woman with a broom, tending the hearth; demeaned by time, yet rooted in the dignity of the one who holds the home together. We owe 妇 more than we say. The mother who became the family's spine. The wife who held the line through the lean years. The grandmother whose silence was strategy. To tattoo 妇 is to honor the feminine force that builds what men abandon — the continuity, the care, the quiet authority of the hearth. The Daoists placed the woman at the root of the world's return; softness that outlasts every empire. Carry it and you carry the matriarch in your blood, the power that nurtures and governs at once. Let it rest where a hand would comfort. The ink is a hearth, lit. It means: the home is hers, and it stands.
