Cultural Story
In the classical tradition 妣 names the departed mother. The 爾雅 states plainly, "父为考,母为妣," pairing 考妣 as father and mother after death. Funerary inscriptions and sacrificial hymns — such as the 楚辭's mournful addresses to the 先妣 — kept her memory alive on ancestral tablets, where she received seasonal offerings beside the 考 of the lineage.
Common words & phrases
- 先妣 late mother
- 考妣 deceased parents
Read the story behind the character
In the modern world the word survives chiefly in solemn, formal contexts. A memorial essay may open by invoking the 先妣, the late mother, whose cooking and patience shaped the writer. Genealogy enthusiasts tracing a family tree record 考妣 side by side, and a tombstone inscription still lists both parents with these ancient, respectful characters that few use in casual speech.
Why this character belongs on skin
The oldest Chinese ritual texts reserved a special word for the mother who has died: 妣, the deceased mother, spoken beside 考, the deceased father, on ancestral tablets that families have tended for three thousand years. The character takes the woman radical and adds a stroke of comparison—perhaps because a mother, once gone, becomes the measure against which everything else is weighed. There is no more universal grief, and none more private. The Greeks had Demeter and Persephone, the ache beneath the seasons; every culture builds its memorials around her name. 妣 does not perform sorrow. It is closer to an inventory: what she gave, what remains, what you now carry in your posture, your temper, your hands. To ink it is to make a tablet of your own body—a permanence the paper tablets never quite had, placed where no one else need understand it. Grief like this does not need an audience. It needs only a surface that will not wash away. Hers does not, now. Neither does the debt.
