Cultural Story

情 is what moves before reason speaks. Tang Xianzu's 牡丹亭 opens on the line 情不知所起,一往而深 — love with no known source, only depth. The heart with 青, the green of growing things, is feeling as something alive and unplanned. The play argues that 情 can raise the dead, which is rather the point.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

情 is the whole emotional furniture: 感情 the bond, 爱情 the romance plot, 心情 the mood you report in a text. Then it bends to fact — 情况 the situation, 国情 the national condition. The word does double duty as heart and as data, the feeling and the briefing, often in the same sentence.

Why this character belongs on skin

The character joins the heart with the green of growing things — feeling as something that rises, like spring through soil, unbidden and alive. 情 is not the thin affection the West reduces to a word; it is the whole weather of being moved: tenderness, grief, the ache of love that will not be reasoned away. The poets of the Tang court drowned their cups in it. To wear it is to refuse the modern gospel that coolness is strength. You choose it because you have loved and lost and loved again, and the scar is the point. It is the confession of a person who feels at full volume, who knows the cost and pays it gladly. Let it rest where your pulse is nearest the surface, a permanent yes to the risk of the heart. The world will teach you to numb. This mark is the opposite — the decision to stay soft on purpose.
