Cultural Story

The 詩經 sings of a sky that clears, but it is 朗 that later poets reach for when the clouds lift — a word of clean, open light. In the Wen Xuan anthology, 朗月 means a moon unobscured by cloud. To the Jin dynasty gentlemen who debated philosophy by lamplight, 朗 described a mind as much as a sky.

Why this character belongs on skin

The moon breaks from the clouds and the whole courtyard goes silver. 朗 is bright and clear, first of the moon and then of any sound or spirit unclouded and true. The character sets the moon itself at the root, as if clarity were a thing that rose at night when lesser lights failed. The Confucians praised the 朗 mind, lucid and unafraid; the Daoist loved the open, windy brightness of a heart with nothing hidden in it. To ink this is to claim the clean light you carry when the fog of doubt lifts and you know, for a moment, exactly who you are. Wear it where the moon would find you, a quiet lamp on the skin. The mark says you have known the clear hour and will wait for it again, and that whatever else the dark does, it cannot undo the fact that you have been, and will be, luminous.
