Cultural Story
李 is the plum, and 桃李 — peaches and plums — became the metaphor for a teacher's students, who spread and bear fruit far from the trunk. The Tang poet Li Bai bore the surname; so did the founding emperor of the Tang, Li Yuan. A 李树 in blossom is the quiet white of a spring courtyard.

Read the story behind the character
李 is the most common surname in China and the fruit in a summer market: 李子 sour and dark, 李花 the white bloom in March. 行李 is the suitcase you drag through a station — its link to plum long forgotten. A teacher retired thirty years still gets 桃李 at every reunion. The character is both a name and a snack.
Why this character belongs on skin
The lǐ is the plum — the small dark fruit that ripens while the cold still hangs in the air, sweetening precisely because the season is hard. In the old gardens it was planted by the writer's window, and a good year for plums was a good year for poems. There is a stoic sweetness in it: the tree does not wait for comfort to bear fruit. We wait for conditions. Lǐ does not. A tattoo of the fruit, or the tree, is a small pact with persistence — to yield something good out of an unkind season, the way the plum does. The ink sits like a bruise of purple on the skin, beautiful for the same reason the fruit is: because it came early, and it came anyway, and the cold could not talk it out of being sweet.
