然 shows 肉 over fire — meat roasting, the original 'so' and 'thus.' The 论语 and Zhuangzi use 然 for what is as it is: 自然, 突然, 当然. It became the great grammatical particle of classical prose, affirming reality. To the Daoists, 自然 was the uncarved, self-so world; the character is agreement with things as they burn and become.
