Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 玉 玉 (yù, 4th tone) receives one of the Shuowen Jiezi's longest ethical entries: 「玉,石之美有五德者。潤澤以溫,仁之方也;䚡理自外,可以知中,義之方也;其聲舒揚,尃以遠聞,智之方也;不撓而折,勇之方也;銳廉而不忮,絜之方也」 — a beautiful stone with five virtues: warmth to the touch (benevolence), a grain readable from outside so you can know the inside (righteousness), a tone that carries far (wisdom), breaking rather than bending (courage), and an edge that is sharp without malice (integrity). 《禮記·聘義》 states the doctrine directly: 「君子比德於玉焉」. The Book of Songs gives both the tenderness and the labour: 《秦風·小戎》 「言念君子,溫其如玉」 ('I think of my lord: warm as jade'), and 《衞風·淇奧》 「如切如磋,如琢如磨」 — cut, filed, chiselled, polished. Honest disclosure: 玉 is not a Western 'precious gem' boast; its whole value is moral and tactile. It is also very common in given names, especially women's, so a lone 玉 may read as a name.
Cultural Story
玉 is jade, the stone the Chinese honored above gold; the 說文 says '石之美者.' 君子 wore 玉 to show virtue, and 詩經 compares a fair lady to 美玉. From 玉佩 at the waist to 玉器 in tombs, jade embodied purity, rank, and the soul's patient polish.

Why this character belongs on skin
玉 is jade — the stone the Chinese honored above gold, cool to the touch, veined with the color of river light. Confucius said it held eleven virtues: charity, wisdom, justice, music in its clink. To wear jade is to wear restraint made beautiful; it does not flash, it deepens. The warrior carried it at the belt, the lover gave it as a promise that would not tarnish. To mark 玉 on your skin is to choose the quiet kind of worth — the value that survives being dropped, that grows warmer the longer it is held. It asks nothing loud of you. It simply sits, like a stone kept in the palm through a long night, and by its patience teaches the one lesson gold never learns: the finest thing is the one that endures without asking to be noticed.
