Cultural Story

The graph is a field seen from above — squares hedged by paths — drawn on oracle bones before the Shang harvested from them. The Zhou king theoretically owned all land under the well-field system, nine squares with eight families' plots ringing the lord's, plowed together at season's start.

Read the story behind the character

Fields still frame the countryside: open 田野, farmland 田地, flooded 水田 paddies where rice stands in rows, and the gentrified word 田园 selling countryside idylls to tired city dwellers. At school, 田径, track and field, is the sport that literally takes its name from the farm path.

Why this character belongs on skin

The square you draw when you think of home is never a square. It is four paths meeting, water running between them, the measured grid a farmer's hand leaves on the earth. 田 is that grid — the character itself a little map of furrowed land, ordered so life can grow. To the Confucian eye it was civilization itself: the wild made gentle, the chaos given rows. Carry it and you carry the oldest bargain we made with the ground — that if we tend it, it feeds us; that work and soil are the same sacred thing.
