目 is the drawn eye — a slit with the pupil set inside. The Book of Songs praises 美目盼兮, a glance so clear it seems to speak, and classical idiom kept the eye as the measure of judgment: 目光如炬, a gaze like a torch, marked a leader who read men truly.

Why this character belongs on skin

The eye is the only organ that shows the world what it is looking at. 目 is the eye, drawn in the old scripts as a literal lid and iris, the window the soul was said to leak from. To be seen is to be known, and to see is to take responsibility for the sight. The West spoke of the eye of God and the evil eye alike; the East trusted the gaze to judge and to bless. To wear 目 is to make a vow of witness—to refuse to look away from what is ugly and what is holy. A tattoo of 目 is for the one who has been watched and chose, finally, to watch back.
