Cultural Story
The Shuowen explains 短 with a craftsman's logic: length and shortness were checked against the arrow 矢 as a standard, hence the arrow over 豆. The Songs of Chu offers its famous humility — 尺有所短,寸有所长, 'a foot can be short, an inch can be long' — reminding readers that even standards fall short somewhere, and even the smallest measure exceeds somewhere else.

Read the story behind the character
Shortness structures the day. Commuters dissolve waiting time into 短视频; a film festival screens a 短片 (short film, clip) between features; summer brings out the 短裤 (shorts). A project stalls on 短缺 (shortage, lack) of parts, so the meeting gets 缩短 (shortened, reduced). And the old fairness survives in office small talk — everyone candidly owns a 短处 (shortcoming, weakness) or two.
Why this character belongs on skin
An arrow and a bean: 短, short—矢, the arrow, beside 豆, the ancient vessel. Etymologists argue over the image, but the feeling is settled: a thing measured and found wanting in length. Yet brevity is the secret weapon of everything beloved. The haiku. The dash of lightning. The letter left on the pillow. Cherry blossoms are gorgeous precisely because the season is 短; so was that summer, so is this life. The Chinese mourn impermanence and paint it on silk anyway—shortness is what makes the watching worth it. Seneca told us life is long enough if we know how to use it; the point was never length. A tattoo of 短 is a memento mori with a grin: brief, yes—but burning. Say the short thing. Stay the short while. It counts.
