素 is plain white silk, undyed — hence simplicity, sincerity, the unadorned truth. Letters traveled as 素书 on white silk; mourners wore plain hempen dress; fasts before sacrifice meant 素食. Poets compared moonlight to white silk laid on water, and the aesthetic canon ranked 素朴 above all ornament — plainness as the highest polish.
