Cultural Story

荫 is shelter: the cool pool of shadow beneath a tree, spelled with its grass radical and shade's own phonetic. Old roads were planted with elms so travelers could walk the whole journey in 树荫. The word then climbed the family tree — 庇荫 meant an ancestor's merit shading his descendants, in the Tang literally, as sons of great officials inherited rank without examination, protected fortune falling like cool air from above.

In the modern world

August noon drives everyone into the 树荫 of the old camphor tree, cicadas droning in its 荫凉 while ice cream melts faster than it's eaten. A job seeker jokes that he has no 庇荫 — no family connections shading his résumé — just a portfolio and stubbornness. City foresters, measuring canopy coverage street by street, promise that in ten years every school run will pass under continuous shade.

Why this character belongs on skin

Step beneath the old tree and the sun forgives you. The shade, the cool dominion of the branches, the shelter a living thing offers without being asked. The Confucian gentleman planted trees he would never sit under, for the shade was a gift to strangers. To be in shade is to be protected, and to plant it is to be generous beyond your own life. The Buddhist monk sought the bodhi's shadow to sit and wake. To carry this mark is to say you have been sheltered, and that you mean to shelter others, that your strength is the kind that cools. Ink it broad across the back, a canopy in line, the place where someone tired could always rest against you. The shade does not explain itself. It simply stays, and the weary find it.
