Near in space and in time, the character 近 is the 附近 you can walk to, the 最近 event on the calendar, the 接近 of one thing to another. In poetry the 近体诗, the 'recent-style verse,' was the regulated form fixed in the Tang with strict tones and couplets, so called because it stood near to the poets who perfected it. 近代 is the modern age just behind us, still warm.
