Cultural Story

Wang Bo, in his preface to the Tengwang Pavilion, wrote of a 雁阵 startled by the cold, their calls cut off at the Hengyang shore — geese whose southward line marked the edge of the known warm world. The 鸿雁 also carried letters in old poems, a bird trusted with news no road could carry. To watch a 孤雁 cross a pale sky was to read departure itself, written in moving wings.

Read the story behind the character

A warden at the Poyang Lake reserve counts a flock of 大雁 resting in the shallows during the autumn migration, logging the 雁阵 formations in his notebook. A tagged 鸿雁 from last year has reappeared, proof the wetland still works as a stop. A volunteer photographs a 孤雁 separated from its group, and the team radios to keep boats clear of the bird.

Why this character belongs on skin

Each autumn the wild geese write a line across the cold sky and call it leaving. Yan has always been the messenger — the bird that carries the letter home, the V that means someone is gone and someone waits. Lovers read them as postmarks from the absent; generals watched them cross the border and thought of the men who would not return. To ink yan is to honor the distance you have crossed and the one you still cross in memory, the faithful flight that does not pretend the south is not far. Let this character rest where the shoulder meets the wing of you, a quiet vow that you are a creature of passage, loyal to the journey, sending word even when the sky is emptiest.
