The 'Book of Songs' opens one ode with a yellow bird that flies and 集 upon the shrubs, the perching seen as a small gathering of life. From that settling came the word for assembling people and things. A 诗集 gathers a poet's scattered lines, a 集体 gathers many wills into one, and a market 集合 once meant simply the birds coming to rest together at dusk.

Birds landing in one tree — that is the oldest picture inside 集, the character for gathering, for the market at dawn, for every collection worth keeping. Magpies on a branch became a word for all convergence: friends at a table, harvest in the barn, the scattered pages of a life bound at last into one book. There is warmth in this character, the specific warmth of things coming together after long dispersal — the reunion, the homecoming, the band reassembled one last time.
