Cultural Story
《説文解字》says 鳞 means “鱼甲也” (the armor of fish), formed from the fish radical 魚 with the sound 粦. In early texts 鳞 refers to the scales covering fish and reptiles, later extended to dragons and mythical beasts. The Shijing and Zhuangzi use 鳞 to evoke the scaly tribe of water creatures beneath the waves.

Read the story behind the character
We speak of 鱼鳞 (fish scales) scraped from a fresh catch, or a single 鳞片 (scale, squama) shed in a pond. Buildings 鳞次 (row upon row) stand in tight order like fish scales along a street, and an accident victim left 遍体鳞伤 (black and blue) draws on the same scaly image of bruised skin.
Why this character belongs on skin
The dragon of the East wears five-clawed majesty, but look closely at the old paintings: its whole power is made of lín—scales, thousands of them, each small as a coin, laid in imbricate rows so the light ripples along the body like moving water. Fish carry the same armor; so did the warriors of myth, who wore armor called guī jiǎ, tortoise and shell. The ancients found meaning in the pattern: the scale is protection that also shimmers, defense that is also beauty. In the Year of the Dragon, girls are named for scales and swim like them; on the kitchen table, a whole steamed fish—skin intact, lín glistening—means abundance, because the word for fish rhymes with surplus. There is a verse in the old bestiary that a single scale out of place on a dragon dooms it, which is another way of saying perfection is a matter of details. This ink is for the one armored in small hard-won things—each a scar that caught the light. Not hard. Scaled. There is a difference, and it shimmers.
