Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 伏 伏 (fú, 2nd tone) is, in Xu Shen, the watchful servant: 司也。从人从犬 — 'to watch, to serve; from 人 (person) and 犬 (dog),' the dog that keeps watch on man. It means 'to lie prone, to hide, to subdue, to yield.' The classics turn it to concealment and fate: the Shujing (大禹谟) '嘉言罔攸伏' (good words are not to be hidden); the Shijing (小雅) '潛雖伏矣' (though hidden in the deep); the Zuozhuan (隐十一年) '許既伏其罪矣' (Xu has submitted its guilt); the Jia Yi (鵩赋) '禍兮福所倚,福兮禍所伏' (calamity leans on fortune, fortune lurks in calamity). As a free morpheme 伏 means 'to hide, subdue, prostrate,' mixed — 伏法 means 'to be executed.' Honest disclosure: 伏 carries both 'latent power' (潜伏) and 'submission/execution' (伏法, 降伏). On skin it is balanced; pair it with 羲 (伏羲, the culture-hero) or 藏 (伏藏) for the positive 'latent' sense, and disclose the 伏法 execution reading.

Cultural Story

伏 is a man and a dog bending low, to crouch, to hide, to lie in wait. The 說文 reads it as to crouch, to submit. 埋伏 and 伏擊 are the ambush the 三國演義 springs; 伏筆 the hint a novelist plants. 伏法 is the executed criminal; 蟄伏 the creature folded into winter. The character is the lowered body, the waiting, the submission to what comes.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 伏 is a force lying low — hidden, waiting (潜伏), like the dog at watch. It can mean 'subdue' or darkly 'be executed' (伏法). Wang Xun's Boyuan tie is the one true Jin voice that survived; wear 伏 as latent power made present, and pair 伏羲 to keep the hero, not the execution.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

埋伏 is the trap in the game and the audit; 伏击 the raid headline. 起伏 is the hills and the stock chart; 伏笔 the clue you missed. 蛰伏 is the startup waiting out the slump; 伏法 the verdict carried out. The character names the crouch, the ambush, the hint, the fall of the condemned. It still means the body bent low, whether a dog, a soldier, or a plotline holding its breath.

Why this character belongs on skin

The greatest power often lies down. 伏 is the crouch — the tiger before the spring, the hidden force, the summer heat that presses you flat, the submission of a body that knows when not to rise. The character sets a man beside the idea of a prone figure, low and waiting. In the West we worship the standing, the visible, the loud assertion; we mistake stillness for weakness. But 伏 is the strategic silence, the strength that waits for its hour. To wear it is to honor the low position, the patience, the art of disappearing until the moment is right. It is the tattoo for the one who has learned that the deepest force is the one you cannot see. Lie low. The tiger does not explain itself. It simply, terribly, waits.
