Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 显 Xian (3rd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi gives 「显, 头明饰也」 — a bright ornament on the head, such as the beads of a coronet; Duan Yucai notes this is 'the head's bright adornment, the miǎn and biàn'. From that concrete shine the word widened to 'manifest, illustrious'. The Erya says 「光也」 (light); the Documents, Tai Shi, declare 「天有显道, 厥类惟彰」 (heaven has a manifest Way, its kinds are made bright); the Odes, Hymns, sing 「天维显思」 (heaven is manifest indeed). Name-lore assigns Fire (火); the Kangxi form 顯 runs twenty-three strokes (頁部), the simplified 显 nine. As a free morpheme 显 is to shine forth, to be eminent. Honest route: 显 also serves as the respectful term for the dead (显考/显妣); disclose the root is the bright coronal ornament — eminence, not mourning.
Cultural Story
显 is the seen and the great. 显考 the late father on the tablet; 显 is the eminent clan. 显示 the readout; 显著 the marked result. The word is visibility as rank — the ancestor honored, the effect plain, the house that stands forward. The Shuowen sees the light on the head, the noticed and the noble made one.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 显 is a bright ornament on the head — 㬎, sun glinting among fine threads, the Latin manifestus, made visible. It carries no negative shade: 明显 'obvious', 显赫 'illustrious'. Pair it with 微 (显微) and the hidden becomes clear. In Wang Zhi's southern Wang-clan running script the character wears polished, aristocratic shine — eminence, not mourning.

Read the story behind the character
显示 is the screen; 明显 the tell. 显著 the finding; 显眼 the stain. 显现 the bug. The word runs the device and the disgrace — the output, the obvious flaw. From the monitor to the scandal, 显 is what shows itself, the data on the glass and the fault on the blazer, both impossible now to unsee.
Why this character belongs on skin
显 is to reveal, to make something plain that was once dim. 显然 means obviously — as if to say, of course, as if your truth were always the clear thing underneath the noise. We learn early to obscure, to soften the edges so the world stops flinching; 显 is the undoing of that training. It is the forehead-baring gesture of a life no longer edited for comfort. To reveal is not to perform — it is to stop the constant dimming, to let whatever light you carry land at full wattage. Some of us reveal slowly, and that is holy too; 显 honors the timing as much as the act. Carry it where you want the truth to be undeniable, a single character that says you are done being a rumor about yourself. Ink it, and let the obvious finally be yours, worn without footnote or excuse.
