Cultural Story
舰 is a great war-vessel, the battleship of the oar-and-sail age: towered 楼船 of the Han, fire-rammers of the Song, turtle-backed ironclads of the Ming. Navies were counted in 舰队, fleets, commanded from the 旗舰, the flagship flying the admiral's banner, and chroniclers named each 舰长, ship captain, as they named generals. The sea, the histories remind us, was won ship by ship.

Read the story behind the character
At the naval museum you climb a decommissioned 军舰, a warship, and squeeze past its 舰艇, the vessels moored alongside. Your nephew builds a model 舰队, a whole fleet, on his desk, appointing himself 舰长, fleet captain, of the 旗舰, the flagship, naturally. On the news, an aircraft carrier 航母 — a warship the size of a town — passes through the strait.
Why this character belongs on skin
A warship is a city that learned to move, a floating argument written in steel. The character 舰 rides the boat radical because every great vessel is first a boat that refused the comfort of the shore. To build a 舰 is to admit the world is not yet at peace, that some horizons must be defended or taken. The warrior knows this truth in his bones: safety is a story the harbor tells the frightened. Homer's heroes sailed; the Tang admirals sailed; every age that mattered put its fate on the water. To wear 舰 is not to worship violence but to honor the discipline of those who hold the line so others may sleep. It is the ink of the man who has chosen his sea. Let it rest on you like a hull against the dark, a quiet pledge that you will not be sunk.
