Cultural Story

The ninth day of the ninth month, the Chongyang Festival, is the day for crabs. Families steamed xie and drank chrysanthemum wine against the autumn, the custom fixed in poetry for a thousand years. The animal's season is brief and its pleasure seasonal, so the feast became a small ritual of mortality, eaten with the yellow blooms that outlast it.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

At a Shanghai restaurant the waiter brings a plate of xie, and the diner lifts the shell to scoop the rich xiehuang roe onto rice. The kitchen fries xierou crab meat into dumplings, cracks the xiejiao legs, and piles the empty xieke shells on a side plate. The crab's whole anatomy is named by compounds that begin with this one character for the creature itself.

Why this character belongs on skin

Autumn on the Yangtze, and the whole culture turns to the crab: the hairy mitten crabs of Yangcheng Lake, steamed scarlet, eaten slowly with hammer and needle while poets drink and write about the moon. Xiè is a creature of armored appetite—sideways walker, soft-bodied warrior who wears its skeleton on the outside where everyone can see it. There is wisdom in that. Most of us armor the inside, hiding softness behind a smooth face; the crab does the reverse, displaying its defenses openly and keeping its tenderness within. It moves at an angle, refusing the straight line, which mystics might call its own kind of enlightenment—the understanding that approach and evasion are often the same art. Rilke wrote of the archaic torso whose radiance still demands you change your life; the crab simply demands you come to dinner, crack the shell, and taste what patience protects. This is ink with a sense of humor and a spine. Wear it walking sideways.
