2 · The Character: 因 Yīn (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi gives 「因，就也。从囗、大」 — 'to go along with', a large figure (大) inside an enclosure. Palaeographers read the oracle-bone form as a person lying on a mat, making 因 the original graph for 茵, a sleeping-mat; what you lie on becomes what you rely on, and reliance becomes cause. The classical uses are all about building on the given: 《论语·为政》 「殷因于夏礼，所损益，可知也」 — each dynasty inherits and edits the last; 《孟子·离娄上》 「为高必因丘陵，为下必因川泽」 — to build high, use the hill you already have. Buddhism then loaded it with 因果 (cause and fruit, karma) and 因缘 (hetu-pratyaya). Honest disclosure: modern 因 is mostly the conjunction 'because', so worn alone it reads like a dangling subordinating word, and the karmic reading may be assumed whether you intend it or not.
