Why this character belongs on skin

Between two mountains, the land folds inward — 坳, the hollow, the pass where wind funnels and fog pools. Laozi adored such geometry: the valley holds water precisely because it is low, and lowness, not height, is where everything gathers. Emptiness as abundance; the hollow as the cup. Walk the mountain roads of the south and you find villages nested in these folds, kitchens breathing woodsmoke into the mist, whole lives lived in the earth's one gentle crease. There is a place in every person like that too — the dip between two hard years, the low country where you finally stopped climbing and, paradoxically, started filling. Grief hollows us; so does love, so does grace, and the shape that remains is what holds. The hollow is not defeat. It is capacity. Rain finds it. Herons sleep in it. The morning light enters it last and leaves it last, gold as honey. Inked along the curve of a hip or collarbone, 坳 claims that low place as sacred ground: the fold in the mountain where you gathered everything the heights could never have taught you.
