Cultural Story
A scribe in the Lüshi Chunqiu heard a reader intone san shi she he, three pigs cross the river, and corrected him: the text said ji hai, the day-name, not three swine. The story of shi hai became the type of the copyist's blunder, the eye that turns one mark into another. The character shi itself is the pictograph of the pig, the beast behind the famous error.

Read the story behind the character
In the museum the oracle-bone case shows shi as a clean outline of a pig, the radical still lodged in every pig-word since. A teacher cites lang ben shi tu, fleeing like beasts, to picture a rout, and a calligrapher practices the old form. The character shi now lives mostly on the wall and in the idiom, the pig that once meant a mistake.
Why this character belongs on skin
Drawn six thousand years ago on bone, this character is a pig in profile—the low body, the drooping tail, unmistakable even before you can read. It is one of the oldest glyphs in the language, and one of the most consequential: set under a roof radical, it becomes home itself, the character for family and house, because in the old settlements prosperity was literally measured in pigs. The boar, though—remember the boar. Wild, tusked, unstoppable, it gave its name to the final animal of the zodiac's cycle, the twelfth and last, the one that arrives after all the striving and simply enjoys existence. There is a whole philosophy buried in the barnyard: the Chinese kept the pig at the center of the household because abundance and appetite are not sins but foundations. To wear this ancient little beast is to side with the earthiest virtues—fertility, courage, the right to enjoy what you have earned. The oldest character in your ink. The truest, some would say. It was never ashamed of anything.
