湘 is the 湘江 (Xiang River) of the south, the water of Qu Yuan's exile in the Chu Ci, where the goddess of the 湘 wept for a lost love. The region's 湘菜 (Hunan cuisine) grew famed for heat, and 湘潭 (Xiangtan) later bore reformers' contemporaries. The 湘 feeds the rice fields of the Chu heartland.
