Cultural Story

榻 is a narrow couch or bed, and the Shuowen says '榻 is a bed.' In the Wei-Jin age a famous guest would be invited to 下榻, 'lower the couch' for him - a honour still echoed when we say a dignitary 下榻 at a hotel. The 榻 was low, plain, the seat of conversation and naps; the 床榻 of a study held a scholar's scrolls. The word is hospitality made physical - the place you lay out for a valued visitor.

Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A hotel billboard says a minister will 下榻, stay, at their tower, borrowing the ancient courtesy. At home a low 床榻, a couch-bed, fills the study, and a summer nap happens on a 藤榻, a cane couch. Though we say 'bed' plainly, the 榻 keeps its polite air - the word used when a guest of honour arrives, the couch lowered in welcome, the surface where talk and rest have met for two thousand years.

Why this character belongs on skin

A daybed, low to the ground, lacquered or plain: the ta is where old China did its intimacy. Friends were honored with the phrase xia ta—come down to my couch—meaning stay, talk, let the lamp burn late. It is where the scholar read until sleep took the book from his hand, where wine was poured and secrets kept, where a body finally admits what the day denied. There is something almost sacred in the plainness of it: no throne, no ornament, just wood and cloth and the permission to lie down. The Daoists would say rest is not the opposite of the Way but its texture—wu wei as a horizontal posture. Everyone owns exhaustion; few own surrender. This character is for the person you want to keep, for the room you call home, for the claim that pleasure and peace are the same quiet. Ink it low, near the hip or ribs, where the body softens.
