2 · The Character: 息 息 (xī, 1st tone) is glossed by the Shuowen Jiezi as 喘也。从心从自 — 'to breathe; from 心 (heart) and 自 (self/nose),' the self drawing breath. Kangxi files it at 10 strokes. As a word 息 means breath, to rest, to cease, and — by extension — a child (子息). 《詩·小雅·北山》 warns 無恆安息 — 'do not forever rest at ease.' 《莊子·逍遙遊》 uses it for stillness: 生物之以息相吹也 — 'creatures breathe each other into being.' 《禮記·檀弓》 gives the negative: 姑息 — 'to coddle, to let things slide.' 息 also names 息壤 ('ever-growing earth') and 息影 ('retire from view'). Honest note: 息 is calm and fertile, but 姑息 (indulgence) and 窒息 (suffocate) are its shadow-words.
