Cultural Story
The Zuo Zhuan warns of a state where 尾大不掉, the tail is too big to wag, the subordinate grown too strong for the head to turn. 掉 is the swing and the fall both, the motion that undoes control from the wrong end, and the prince who ignored the tail later lost the head, which is the only part the tail was ever truly interested in.

Read the story behind the character
You 掉下 the key; a child 丟掉s the sweet; a marcher 掉隊, falls behind; a car 掉頭, turns around. The unruly tail is a U-turn now. The swing that loses control is the same, whether it drops a coin, a formation, or merely a sense of direction, and the U-turn is only the tail, finally deciding which way the head should face.
Why this character belongs on skin
A leaf lets go and the whole tree seems to exhale; the letting go was the hardest part and the wisest. To drop is not always loss. Sometimes it is the hand opening because it has learned what it was holding was never theirs. The Dao teaches that what is clenched cannot receive, and that the autumn does not mourn. This character holds the falling, the turning away, the thing released so something else can arrive. There is a courage in the downward stroke, a refusal to grip a life that has already ended. To ink it is to honor every weight you set down and walked lighter for. It is not a scar of what was lost. It is a small, deliberate bow to the art of release, worn where only you know its meaning.
