僅 showed a man with a handful, scarcely, barely, only just. The 說文 reads it as to be few, to be scarce. The 史記 uses it for the thin survivors of a catastrophe, 僅存. It is the word for the margin, the little that remains when most is gone, the hand holding what the flood left. Before it meant only it meant almost not.
