Cultural Story
階, now 阶, sets 介 within the mound radical 阝 and means steps or a stair, the graded ascent of a terrace or hall. From literal stairs it rose to rank and degree, the steps of social standing and official grade. 阶级 once meant the stairs of hierarchy and later “class,” while 阶段 is a stage along a path, each a tread in a larger climb.

Read the story behind the character
We climb 台阶 to a door, rise through 阶级 in society, pass 阶段 after stage in a project, and belong to a 阶层 or stratum of workers. A 阶梯 is any ladder or staircase, literal or figurative. 阶 turns the humble step into a metaphor for progress and rank, the treads by which we ascend buildings, careers, and the long stair of history.
Why this character belongs on skin
One stone above another, and another, until the height is climbed — that is 阶, the step, the stair, the rank earned by ascent. The character sets the earth-mound beside a measure, as if status were something you stepped up to. We live on 阶 we did not build: the class we were born to, the title granted, the rung we fought to reach. To tattoo it is to mark the climb, the long stair of becoming someone your younger self wouldn't recognize. The Buddhists climb toward awakening one step at a time; the soldier earns his stripes. There is no shame in the low step, only in refusing the next. Carry 阶 and you carry the verticality of ambition, the faith that up exists. Let it run along the spine, where you rise. The ink is a stair carved in skin. It says: I am still ascending. The top is not yet in sight, and that is fine.
