水 in oracle bone script is a flowing stroke between two banks — a stream. The 說文解字 says '準也', leveling, the standard of even flow. 老子 praised water as the humble good; 孔子 stood by a river and sighed that time flows like it. 詩經 hymns 河水. Water was the model of yielding strength.
