绮 was figured silk, pattern woven in so the cloth shimmered with hidden pictures, and poets borrowed its sheen for everything lovely. Xie Tiao watched evening clouds scatter like 绮 across the sky; Buddhist teachers, less indulgently, warned monks against 绮语, ornamental or frivolous speech, as one of the sins of the tongue.
