Cultural Story

丐 is a man with his bowl tipped toward the road. The 史記 notes 乞丐之徒 among the broken followers of fallen houses. Jin Yong's 射雕英雄传 made 丐帮 the largest martial sect in the land, beggars with rods and brotherhood, begging by day and trading secrets by night. Reality was colder: a 丐 in winter warmed his hands over a drain and hoped for a steamed bun.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

乞丐 still squat at subway exits with cups and cardboard. 丐帮 is now mostly a joke, a beggar gang of freeloading friends splitting one hotpot. The character rarely appears outside these two words. You will not hear it in an office; you will see it in a newspaper photo of a raid on a child-begging ring, or in a costume drama where the hero joins the ragged brotherhood to learn humility.

Why this character belongs on skin

丐 is the beggar at the gate, the one with empty hands held out to the world. He owns nothing and therefore fears nothing. There is a strange freedom in that poverty — no throne to defend, no name to protect. The Daoists loved this figure: the sage who has given up everything and found the whole sky. To carry 丐 is not to celebrate lack but to honor the courage of the open palm. You have nothing to lose because you have let it all go. In a life of grasping, he is the only one truly at rest. Ink him where only you can see, and remember: the empty cup is the one the universe fills. He is humility made permanent, the mark of a soul that has stopped performing wealth and started trusting the unknown to provide.
