Cultural Story

卿 named the senior ministers of the Han court, the Nine Ministers beneath the Three Dukes. An emperor called a favored aide 爱卿. In the Shishuo Xinyu, Wang Rong's wife addressed him as 卿; he objected that a wife calling her husband so broke propriety, and she answered that to love him was reason enough -- hence 卿卿我我. The word moved from rank to endearment.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

Period dramas have the emperor drawl 爱卿 to a kneeling official; romance novels lean on 卿卿 for sweethearts. 公卿 and 卿大夫 turn up as the titled cast of costume shows. In a modern wedding reading someone might borrow 卿 as a fond archaic "you". The rank is long gone, but the intimate use survives in speech meant to sound old-fashioned and tender.

Why this character belongs on skin

When the emperor's friend spoke to him as an equal, he used a word reserved for the closest of hearts. 卿 is that address, not a title but a tenderness, the ancient Chinese you spoken between lovers and sworn brothers when formality fell away. To carry 卿 on your skin is to name someone without naming them, to wear a door left open. Confucius taught that right relation is the root of all order, and here the relation is intimacy itself. It is the word you would murmur at the threshold, the you that means I have chosen you above the crowd. There is a vow folded in it, quiet as breath. Let the character rest where only a lover's eye will find it, a private scripture. It says you belong to someone, or someone to you, in a way no contract could record. The ink is the whisper that outlasts the evening and the one who spoke it.
