厢 was the side wing. In the courtyard house the 厢房 held the younger sons; the 西厢 the western rooms where, in Wang Shifu's play, Yingying met her lover -- hence 西厢记, the Romance of the West Chamber. A 车厢 was the carriage box. The word names the space set to one side of the main hall, and the story that grew there.
