Cultural Story
Su Shi, exiled to Huangzhou, wrote of 咀嚼 the bitterness of his own poems at night by lamplight. The word also bred suspicion: 咬文嚼字, the pedant who chews on characters, appears in the Qing satire to mock scholars who prize form over sense. To 嚼 is to work something slowly between the teeth, literal or mental.

Read the story behind the character
A toddler 嚼 a sticky rice cake, smearing it across both cheeks. At the office the boss 嚼 gum through the whole meeting. Two colleagues 嚼舌 by the water cooler about the new hire — the gossip travels faster than any memo the manager sends.
Why this character belongs on skin
Jué is the deep chew—jaw working, teeth grinding, the slow deliberate breaking-down that turns a thing of the world into a thing of the body. In Chinese it outgrew the mouth long ago: to cháo jué is to chew over words, an argument, a memory, savoring it the way you would a hard dried plum, getting everything it has before letting go. The monks chewed their rice with a saying attached—eat one grain, take on the hunger of all beings—and Rumi said the same thing differently: the body is a guest house; taste everything that arrives. This is a character against hurry. Fast swallowing is how the world wants you to live—news, love, ambition, all of it gulped and barely noticed. Jué refuses. It insists that meaning, like flavor, is released only under pressure and patience, that some things must be worked at for a long time to give you their whole truth. Wear it as a promise to yourself: to take nothing whole, to taste even the bitter fully, to be someone who actually tastes their one life.
