Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 夫 Fū (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi glosses 夫 as 「丈夫也。从大,一以象簪也」 — an adult man, the character 大 ('great / person') capped by a stroke that pictures the hairpin binding a grown man's hair. In the Changes, the Kui hexagram counsels 「遇元夫,交孚,厉无咎」 — 'meet the primal man, exchange trust; danger, then no blame.' From 'man / husband' 夫 extended to the adult, the worthy, and — as a sentence-initial particle — to 'indeed / that which'. It is a free morpheme but stands alone only with care: a lone 夫 most readily reads as 'husband' or 'man', which can look like half of a pair (夫妇, 丈夫). Disclosures: 夫 is also a common Classical particle (夫天地者…), so it may strike a literate reader as a grammatical opener left hanging; and 夫 is a surname. Best paired — 丈夫 (true man), 夫人 (lady / madame). Element tables assign Water; a minority say Wood — (verify).

Cultural Story

夫 is a man and a husband. The 论语 speaks of 丈夫 (a true man) of integrity and 夫人 (a lady) of standing; 夫妇 (husband and wife) wed in the 周礼 (Rites of Zhou) rites. 农夫 (farmer) turned the 诗经's soil by hand; 大夫 (official, dafu) served the court with counsel. 屠夫 (butcher) appears in 庄子's parables of plain work. The character is the adult male across every station.

In the modern world

A 丈夫 (husband) shops for dinner on the way home; 夫人 (madam) is on the printed invitation. 夫妇 (couple) posts an anniversary photo online; a 农夫 (farmer) sells peaches at a roadside stall. 大夫 (doctor) sees the next patient in five minutes; 屠夫 (butcher) halves a pig on the block. The word still names the man in each role.

Why this character belongs on skin

夫 is a man who has crossed into adulthood — a figure with a hairpin binding his hair, the ancient mark of one who has left boyhood behind. He stands upright. He bears responsibility the way a doorway bears a roof. In the old world he was husband, provider, the one who answers for the household. But the deeper truth is quieter: 夫 is what you become when you stop waiting to be rescued. He is the man who has chosen his burden. There is a dignity in that, a stillness. To wear him on your skin is to make a vow without words — that you will hold the line, that you will be the one others lean on. He does not boast. He simply remains. Some marks shout; this one stays. Carry 夫 and you carry the promise of a man who does not flinch when the weight arrives.
