The Shuowen forms 奴 from a woman (女) under a hand (又), the captured person set to service, and the Classics know it as the lowest condition of all. The Rites speak of 奴婢 in great houses, the Histories of 農奴 bound to the land, and the wary mind of 奴役 — to be enslaved by desire as much as by masters. Though harsh, 奴 was also a mirror: Confucius taught that the truly free man is not 奴 to his appetites, even if no chain binds him.

Read the story behind the character

A history class studies ancient 奴隸 (slaves); a cowardly official is called a 奴才 (slave, servile) for flattering his boss. A documentary shows how empires 奴役 (enslaved) conquered peoples, and a novel depicts a 農奴 (serf) who finally escapes. 奴 is the modern word for bondage in every form — the chained captive of the past and the servile flatterer of today, the condition everyone agrees a human being should never bear.

Why this character belongs on skin

To be owned is the oldest terror, and the oldest discipline. 奴 is the slave, the bondservant, the hand and body given over to another's will. The character joins a person with a whip, a stark honesty about domination we prefer to soften. Yet bondage wears two faces: the chain forced upon us, and the devotion we choose — the monk who calls himself 奴 of the vow, the lover who serves. We fear submission as if it were death. But 奴, held rightly, names the paradox that freedom can be found in giving yourself to something greater. To carry it is to confront that edge, to ask what masters you and whether you chose them.
