Cultural Story
Chao is the bird's nest, drawn as a tree with a dwelling atop, and the Shuo Wen gives it a nest in a tree. The sage Nest-Builder taught people to live off the ground in raised chao (nests), a founding myth of shelter. Niao chao (bird's nest) and feng chao (bee hive) name the homes of creatures, while chao xue (lair) became the brigand's hidden den.

Read the story behind the character
You watch a niao chao (bird's nest) wobble on the balcony rafters, and a bee feng chao (bee hive) hangs safe in the garden. A crime drama raids the gang's chao xue (nest, lair, den) in the hills, and a kid builds a blanket chao on the sofa. Beijing's niao chao stadium hosts the concert, and you text the chao is cozy from your pile of pillows.
Why this character belongs on skin
The nest — 巢 is the tangle of twigs a bird stitches into a home above the reach of the fox. The character shows three birds' nests in a tree, the ancient pictograph of safety built from nothing but gathered sticks and patience. To carry 巢 is to honor the making of refuge, the instinct to gather what you can and weave it into a place the world cannot easily enter. We are nomads told to be frictionless; this mark is the counter-vow, the claim that you will build a here, however small, however provisional. The Daoist sage withdraws to his 巢 in the hills; the weary worker builds one of routine and light. There is a tenderness in 巢, the understanding that home is not found but made, twig by twig, by hands that refuse to be homeless. This is the ink for the person who has built safe from scraps. Wear it where the heart sits, a small nest under the skin, a reminder you can always weave one more.
