Cultural Story
布 is hemp cloth, and the Shuowen names it 'fabric woven from ramie.' In the classics 布 was both a garment and a unit of tribute paid by commoners; the Odes tell of 抱布贸丝, carrying cloth to trade for silk. Because cloth spreads out flat and even, 布 also gained the sense of 'to spread' and 'to declare' - a ruler would 布令, proclaim a decree, as if unfurling a banner. The word thus joins the loom and the loudspeaker.

Read the story behind the character
Today 布 still means cloth, but it also means to make things known. A company 宣布 a new policy, declaring it to staff, and the government 公布 the exam results for all to see. Factories 布置 the production line, arranging the work, while branches 分布 across the country. Planners study the city's 布局, its layout, and a tailor feels the 布料, the cloth, before cutting. 布 spreads through both wardrobe and news.
Why this character belongs on skin
Cloth is the first technology of comfort, and 布 is the word for the weave that warms, the proclamation that spreads, the grain sown across a field. To spread is to be generous with what you carry; to declare is to stop hiding. In the old histories, bù was the edict posted on the gate so that everyone, literate or not, would know the law had spoken. A tattoo of 布 is a kind of posting—your own announcement, inked where it cannot be taken back. There is romance in the idea of laying yourself out like cloth for someone to wrap in, and there is power in the opposite: the banner you raise so the timid can find you. Wear it and mean both. Let your skin be the wall where you nailed the thing you refuse to whisper anymore.
